Welcome to Abel House!

As an outreach program, we do all we can to support families so they can take care of their kids at home. But a few of our kids don’t have homes to go to, and there are times when one of our students is recovering from surgery, the parents are away at a funeral or busy in the garden, or they simply cannot offer the attention that is needed. Because of this, we have built a small safe haven. Our 8-10 residents and a rotating team of full-time carers have made Abel House a lively home full of laughter, learning and a whole lot of love.

We have two 5-bed dorms, a treatment room, manager’s room, office, storage space, kitchen, laundry, compost toilets and showers that all surround the covered courtyard that is our social, creative, play and exercise area and classroom. If funding allows, we would love to add a series of rooms for adults with disabilities and women who need a safe place to stay, as well as a proper workshop for vocational training.

Abel House is also where we host regular outreach clinics for physiotherapy, wheelchair maintenance, counselling and workshops for families. Also, the kids in our program are starting to grow up, so income generating occupations such as sewing, carpentry and making doormats offer them some financial independence.

With over 100 students in the community, the Abel Program’s main objective is still its outreach work, supporting people with disabilities at home.
